COMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN -entry level and lateral

SALARY: $3,794 - $4,658/monthly

The City of San Luis Obispo is currently accepting applications for the position of entry level and lateral Communications Technician. Under general supervision, the Communications Technician operates radio telephone systems dispatching public safety emergency vehicles and personnel.  The Communications Technician performs a variety of clerical activities and related work as required.  Employees in this class work a 3/12 schedule requiring various shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE for entry level:

1.     High school diploma or G.E.D.

2.     Two years of typing, keyboard or clerical experience with word
        processing speed of at least 30 w.p.m. net.

3.     Experience operating radio telephone equipment and data entry
        terminals is desirable. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE for lateral:

In addition to the above:

1.      A minimum of two years experience in dispatching for a Public
        Safety Agency.

2.      CAD experience is preferred.

3.      An 80-hour or 120-hour POST Dispatcher Certificate.

Essential Functions
: Receives information and requests for services from the public by telephone.  Receives information over the radio from numerous police, fire, and public works radio frequencies.  Provides resource information to field units and stations, other agencies and the public.  Makes accurate entries into CLETS computer terminals and collects and enters pertinent information into local data storage systems.  Communicates in a clear, easily understood voice with proper diction, under stressful conditions. Must have knowledge of: office methods, practices and procedures/ a combined Police/Fire C.A.D. center; standard broadcasting procedures of a radio telephone system; and Spillman systems is preferred.

And ability to: use computer keyboard effectively while performing radio telephone dispatching.  Communicate in a clear, easily understood voice with proper diction, under stressful conditions.  Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

All applications will be screened by a qualified screening board. 

Those entry level applicants with the qualifications and experience most closely meeting the needs of the department will be invited to participate in a test designed to assess basic dispatching skills.  The test is tentatively scheduled for the morning of Tuesday, June 3, 2008.   (In order to be admitted to the testing, you will be required to bring a typing certificate less than one year old from either an educational institute or a personnel agency certifying a net typing speed of 30 w.p.m. or more AFTER  errors have been subtracted. On-line typing certificates are not accepted.)   Those candidates with the highest testing scores will be invited to an oral interview, tentatively scheduled for June 17, 2008.

Lateral applicants with the qualifications and experience most closely meeting the needs of the department will be invited to an oral interview (no test will be required), tentatively scheduled for May 30th, 2008. Please bring your typing certificate as stated above to the interview.

The final candidate must comply with the medical standards of the position in order to be designated as qualified for employment.  Notices will be mailed to all applicants.

Psychological, Polygraph and Medical Examinations:  Candidates must successfully pass these examinations to remain eligible in the selection process.

Background Investigation:  Prior to appointment, candidates must successfully pass an investigation of their personal history and background to determine suitability for the San Luis Obispo Police Department.
