About the City of San Luis
Obispo San Luis Obispo, an attractive city of 43,000 people, is located in
California eight miles from the Pacific Ocean, midway between Los Angeles and San
Francisco at the junction of Highway 101 and the beautiful Pacific Coast Highway. The city
is nestled between the peaks of the Santa Lucia Mountains and is within 15 miles of beach
front communities such as Morro Bay and Pismo Beach.
This historic and progressive community serves as commercial, governmental and cultural
center of the Central Coast. The County seat, California Polytechnic State University, and
Cuesta College are all located in San Luis Obispo. Also, the area is served by excellent
elementary and secondary schools.
The climate is pleasant year round with summer temperatures rarely exceeding 90 degrees
and its not uncommon to have winter days in the 70s. The ideal weather provides
numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation at the nearby state parks, lakes, and
wilderness areas.
First incorporated in 1856, the City of San Luis Obispo operated under the first
charter starting in 1878. The charter was revised in 1910 and again in 1955 when the
Council/Administration Officer form of government was adopted.
