Sales tax trends upward

Sales tax receipts for the second quarter of calendar year 2010 (April - June) were 2.9% higher than the same quarter one year ago. This is welcome news as it is the first time receipts were up year over year since early 2007.  Overall sales tax receipts are still down 20% from their peak in 2006.

The City's voter-approved Measure Y half-cent sales tax generated $1,357,894 in the same period, rising 3.4% as compared to the second quarter 2009.

Since its inception in 2007, this general purpose revenue has generated approximately $5 million per year to fund operating programs and one-time capital improvements such as neighborhood street paving and pothole repair, key public safety positions, senior citizen services/facilities, flood protection and other vital general purpose services.
