Cultural Heritage Committee Meeting Update

November 26, 2012                    Monday                                           5:30 p.m.

ROLL CALL:      Committee Members Thom Brajkovich, Hemalata Dandekar, Buzz Kalkowski, Patti Taylor, Vice-Chair Bob Pavlik, and Chair Enrica Costello

                        Committee Member Jaime Hill and Chair Enrica Costello were absent.

STAFF:                Senior Planner Phil Dunsmore, Associate Planner Brian Leveille, and Recording Secretary Dawn Rudder

PUBLIC COMMENT: Astrid Gallagher commended Bob Pavlik for his receipt of the Governor's award for historic preservation.

ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA:  Agenda was accepted as presented.

MINUTES:  Minutes of October 22, 2012, were approved as submitted


1.     1144 Buchon Street.  CHC 106-12; Request to add a Contributing property to the Master List of Historic Resources; R-2-H zone; Chris Hoover, applicant.  (Brian Leveille)

RECOMMENDATION:  Recommend the City Council retain the property's current status as a Contributing Historic property.

ACTION:  Moved by Kalkowski/Taylor  to continue the item to a date uncertain and request the applicant provide additional information on the history of Hill, Chapeck, and Hoover families as they relate to significance of this property in the City (5:0).

2.     City-Wide.  CHC 134-11; Review design of a new sign to identify the Old Town Historic District; City of San Luis Obispo – Community Development Department, applicant.  (Phil Dunsmore)

RECOMMENDATION:  Approve a street sign design for the Old Town Historic District.

ACTION:  Moved by Taylor/Kalkowski to approve the artwork for the Old Town Historic District Sign (5:0).


3.    Staff

a.  Agenda Forecast

Staff noted that the December hearing would include an introduction from the consultant for the historic context statement.

b.  Advisory Body Budget Goals – Consolidated

Committee members discussed the advisory body goals and suggested reformatting and the addition of a goal to address City historic resource tours.

4.     Committee

The committee suggested staff return to the CHC with an evaluation of the plaque program with an emphasis on evaluating the design of the plaques to make them more appealing and to add additional historic information.
