Cultural Heritage Committee Meeting Update

August 27, 2012                         Monday                                           5:30 p.m.

ROLL CALL:      Committee Members Thom Brajkovich, Hemalata Dandekar, Jaime Hill, Buzz Kalkowski, Patti Taylor, Vice-Chair Bob Pavlik, and Chair Enrica Costello

STAFF:                Phil Dunsmore, Senior Planner


Dean Miller, San Luis Obispo, addressed the CHC noting several examples of successful preservation projects around the city.

ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA:  The agenda was accepted as proposed.

MINUTES:  Minutes of July 23, 2012, were approved as amended.


1.     751 Palm Street.  ARCMI 23-12; Review of interior/exterior modification to the Parish Hall, hardscaping improvements to the courtyard, and a Mitigated Negative Declaration of Environmental Impact at the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa;    C-D-S-H zone; Rev. Russell Brown, applicant.  (Marcus Carloni)

RECOMMENDATION:  Recommend the Community Development Director approve the interior/exterior modifications and site improvements, and approve the Mitigated Negative Declaration of Environmental Impact, based on findings and subject to conditions of approval.

ACTION:  Moved by Brajkovich/Taylor to approve as proposed (7:0).

2.     City-Wide.  CHC 134-11; Review design and location of new signs to identify Chinatown and Downtown Historic Districts; City of San Luis Obispo Community Development Department, applicant.  (Phil Dunsmore)

RECOMMENDATION:  Approve sign designs for the Chinatown and Downtown Historic Districts and continue the review of the Old Town Historic District sign to a later date pending revisions.

ACTION:  Moved by Dandekar/Pavlik to approve Chinatown and Downtown signs as proposed (7:0).

3.     City-Wide.  CHC 31-12; Review request for proposal to hire a consultant to assist with the preparation of a Historic Context Statement; City of San Luis Obispo Community Development Department, applicant.  (Phil Dunsmore) 

RECOMMENDATION:  Recommend the City Council approve the work scope and RFP to prepare a citywide Historic Context Statement.

ACTION:  Moved by Pavlik/Dandekar to recommend the Council approve the RFP as proposed (7:0).
