Welcome to the City's housing website, an area devoted exclusively to housing issues. There is a growing awareness that the need for affordable housing affects everyone - renters, homeowners, business owners and current and future residents of all income levels. The City of San Luis Obispo recognizes its role in promoting a variety of housing types to meet the needs of the community. The City also has a responsibility to keep the public posted on housing news and opportunities. 

What is Affordable Housing?

Affordable housing means housing that does not cost more than 30 percent of a household's gross income. For example, an affordable monthly rent for a household earning $2,000 per month would be $600 (including utilities). For homeowners, affordable monthly housing expenses for a household earning $4,000 per month would be $1,200 (including mortgage payments, taxes, and condominium association fees). The City's affordable rental housing programs are targeted to low- or very low- income households. Affordable ownership housing are targeted to moderate-income households.

Affordable Housing Standards

 The City of San Luis Obispo publishes Affordable Housing Standards annually on April 1st. These standards include the maximum income levels per household that qualify for affordable housing. The standards also include maximum rent and sales prices for units within the City's Inclusionary Housing Program. Download a copy of the 2011 Affordable Housing Standards.
