The Parks & Recreation Department provides several special events focusing on enjoyable family entertainment. Collaborative efforts with a variety of entities produce the San Luis Obispo Triathlon, Old Fashioned 4th of July and Holiday in the Plaza. The Easter Egg Hunt, Snow Night and Howl-o-ween Hoopla are public events held in conjunction with the Downtown Association.

Snow Night 2009 at Farmer's Market/Chorro Street
Snow Night, co-sponsored with the Downtown Association, allows youth ages 12 and under to experience a "winter wonderland" in Downtown San Luis Obispo.

Easter Egg Hunt 2009 at Farmer's Market/Mission Plaza
Children ages 2-8 can join in on the hunt for treasure filled eggs.

Monster Skate Park Series 2009 at Local Skate Parks
The Central Coast Monster Skate Park Series is a skateboarding contest for youth of all ages, gender and ability levels.  The series, held at various skate parks throughout the country, is divided into eight age categories with prizes and points given for each contest.  Awards for the overall champions are presented at the final contest on May 31.  Registration begins at 9 am, contests begin at 10 am.

Mother's Day Concert 2008 at the Historic Jack House and Gardens
Enjoy an afternoon of music and appreciation for mothers.  All mothers attending receive a complimentary flower and tours are free to families with three generations represented. Tour the Historic Jack House, 536 Marsh Street, for $2.00.

2008 Teen Idol at the Ludwick Community Center

Teen Idol is a singing contest open to all teenagers on the Central Coast.  The show focuses on demonstration of talent rather than competition.

Family Fun Day 2008 at the Historic Jack House and Gardens
The Historic Jack House is the setting for an afternoon of fun for everyone.  Grass games, including badminton, croquet and board games will be available.  An ice cream social tops off the afternoon.  Tours of the Jack House are included in the admission price of $2.00.

Movie at the Mission 2008
Mission Plaza Amphitheatre, Saturday, August 9, at 8:00 p.m.  Charlotte's Web is the movie of the night! Spread out a blanket on the grass of the Mission Plaza Amphitheatre and delight in a free downtown movie experience.

30th Annual SLO Triathlon at Sinsheimer Park
Completion rather than competition is the focus of the event and each participant is encouraged to attain his or her personal best.  This sprint distance triathlon (0.5 mile swim, 15.3 mile bike, 3.1 mile run) accommodates everyone, yet still provides a challenge for the novice and the experienced athlete.  Registration on-line and mail-in begins Saturday, April 26 at 8 am.  Walk-in registration begins Monday, April 28.

Art in the Garden 2008 at the Historic Jack House and Gardens
A "Call to Artists" is now underway for Art in the Garden 2008.  Artists in the following mediums are encouraged to apply: painting, photography, printmaking, graphics, mixed media, pottery, sculpture, glass, jewelry, fiber, leather, metal or wood.  Applications will be available in early spring.  Deadline for applications is Friday, June 13. Howl-o-ween Hoopla 2008 at Farmer's Market/Garden Street
This fun and safe Halloween event is offered to children during Farmer's Market in Downtown San Luis Obispo.  Trick-or-Treat at downtown businesses and stop by Garden Street for carnival games with candy and toys.  Also bring a pumpkin for the "Pumpkins on Parade" showcase and be a part of the costume contest.

Holiday in the Plaza 2008 at Mission Plaza
Craft vendors display a variety of exquisite and unique handmade items.  While shopping, also taste delicious foods and listen to favorite holiday entertainment.  Santa's House will also be open for children during the event.

Community/Major Special Events

 

Many special events are held throughout San Luis Obispo annually ranging from fun runs, festivals, parades, crafts fairs, and more!   For more information on any of the events on the calendar, contact Christine Wallace, Special Event Supervisor at (805) 781-7303.

Anyone wishing to sponsor a special event within the City of San Luis Obispo should obtain a Special Events Permit Application from the SLO Parks & Recreation Department.

The application fee must be submitted with the application at least 60 days prior to the event. All other fees applicable to your event are determined by following the fee policy included in the Special Events Ordinance.
