Bell Ceremony, Reflections on Courage to Highlight 9/11 Ceremony at SLO Fire Station

Post Date:09/01/2017 9:34 AM

WorldTradeMemorialReflections on “Courage,” bagpipes and a bell ceremony will highlight A Day of Remembrance Sept. 11 at the San Luis Obispo World Trade Center Memorial.

The public is invited to attend the annual ceremony, located at Fire Station 1 (2160 Santa Barbara Ave.), from 8-11 a.m.

It’s been 16 years since terrorists hijacked four planes and launched the deadliest attack in world history, killing roughly 3,000 people on American soil. Among those who died that day were 403 emergency workers who responded to the tragedy.

This year’s ceremony will feature singing by students in the San Luis Coastal school district, plus 5th grade artwork and a poem that won an 8th grade writing contest. The ceremony will also feature the posting of colors from the Honor Guard and reflections on “Courage” presented by the 2017 Boys’ and Girls’ state representatives at San Luis Obispo High School.

The memorial, designed by artist Kathleen Caricof, pays tribute to the emergency workers who died with 403 metal posts embedded in an arc. Dedicated in 2015, it also features a 1,500-pound steel beam from the World Trade Center.

Parking for the ceremony is limited, so residents are encouraged to walk, bike or carpool.
