Repaving on Madonna and Los Osos Valley Roads Set to Begin August 7th

Post Date:07/31/2017 8:37 AM

The City will begin repaving stretches of both Los Osos Valley Road (LOVR) and Madonna Road next week, making the busy roads safer for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

Work is expected to last four months. During that time, the roads will remain open, but commuters can expect intermittent lane closures and delays Mondays through Fridays, with some overnight hours possible.

17-SLOCity-0314-LOVR & Madonna Paving Social SquareThe repaving will occur on LOVR, between Calle Joaquin and the outer (western) city limit, while the Madonna Road repaving will occur between LOVR and the Highway 101 overpass.

In addition to repaving those busy thoroughfares, the project will create bike lanes, and bike lanes with vehicle-bicycle conflict areas will be painted green. Americans with Disabilities Act pedestrian improvements will be made along the entrance to the Madonna Plaza Shopping Center and the intersection of El Mercado and Madonna Road. And vehicle lanes will be narrowed, which will make traffic move slower and safer.

Multi-modal transportation is a major city goal in 2017-2019. Identified by the community and by the City Council as a priority, the goal includes implementing the Bicycle Master Plan, pedestrian safety and the Short-Range Transit Plan.

The project, originally budgeted for $3.2 million, was bid for $2.6 million and awarded to Granite Construction. It will be funded largely from the Local Revenue Measure (Measure G) and savings from other projects, including Johnson Avenue repaving and the LOVR interchange project. Bicycle funds will also be used, which pay specifically for bicycle safety improvements.
